Would you like to learn more about television filming?
After finishing the scene, Xu Xiangwei immediately put down her prop and hurried toward the corridor.
She had noticed Chen Ruowen nearby while filming, so as soon as she wrapped up, she rushed over.
Seeing Xu Xiangwei recognize her, Chen Ruowen smiled and took off her sunglasses.
“How are you feeling?”
Xu Xiangwei’s entire demeanor had transformed; the heavy sense she once carried, as if burdened by something, was gone. She seemed to radiate with new life.
“It’s good. The shooting schedule is a bit tight, but I feel fulfilled.”
Most importantly, the production team had paid her half of her salary in advance, so her family’s financial troubles were temporarily resolved. If she ever encountered that man again in the future… No, she’d rather not meet him again.
“Did you get all the upcoming schedules?” Chen Ruowen asked.
Xu Xiangwei nodded. “I’ll focus on finishing ‘Imperial Harem’ over these five months. After that, I have two modern dramas lined up. When ‘Imperial Harem’ airs, there’ll be a series of interviews and a sports variety show running in tandem.”
That level of exposure was considerable. Chen Ruowen had kept her word; the airing times for the dramas she arranged were almost seamlessly connected. If ‘Imperial Harem’ became a hit, Xu Xiangwei could ride the wave of publicity straight into the ranks of second- or even first-tier stars.
These were resources she’d never dared dream of in past years.
After discussing how her upcoming projects would align, Chen Ruowen was about to put her sunglasses back on and head to her next set visit when someone tapped her on the back.
Chen Ruowen frowned and turned around, only to see an old face radiating an almost saintly enthusiasm.
When she looked back, Cheng Sheng excitedly handed her a sheet of paper.
“Miss, are you interested in TV production?”
Since when had a con artist wandered into Twin Stars? Weren’t employee cards required to enter the film base? Had he snuck in with an extra group?
Chen Ruowen paid him no mind, quickly donning her sunglasses and heading toward her destination. Cheng Sheng called after her and chased her down, leaving Xu Xiangwei standing there, a bit dazed.
That old man seemed oddly familiar.
Would he cause trouble for Chen Ruowen? If anything happened to her at the film base, Chairman Chen would hold everyone working there today responsible. Xu Xiangwei glanced in the direction Chen Ruowen had left, then hurried to find the director of ‘Imperial Harem’.
“Director! Miss Chen just visited our set, and some old man we don’t know chased after her. I’m worried something might happen. Should we send a few people to check it out right away?”
The director impatiently waved his script.
“We still have seven pages to shoot today! Why aren’t you focusing on your lines and scenes? Why worry about some old guy? What’s Miss Chen got to do with you?”
Xu Xiangwei sighed and pulled up a photo on her phone, showing it to the director.
“Miss Chen Ruowen! Chairman Chen’s daughter!”
“Chen Ruowen… Miss Chen’s here?!” The previously annoyed director snapped to attention, tossing his script aside like garbage. “Why didn’t you say so sooner! Who chased her? Which way did they go? Hurry up and follow them!”
On the other side, Chen Ruowen was nearly rolling her eyes at the persistent old man tailing her. She’d thought he was just handing out flyers and had no intention of engaging, but he was surprisingly spry, keeping up with her all the way.
“Miss, miss! Please hear me out! I’m a legitimate director from a reputable crew. No deposit, no guarantees, no membership cards, and absolutely no shady business! Our crew treats people well, always three dishes and a soup for lunch. The director never changes the script, the atmosphere’s positive and uplifting—everyone works together to uphold the core socialist values!”
“We keep up with the times, using the latest technology and equipment, ensuring every actor’s safety. We value patriotism, professionalism, integrity, and kindness. Unless special shots require it, we don’t recommend using doubles, nor do we accept post-production dubbing except for special cases. There are no other drawbacks—please learn more!”
Chen Ruowen sidestepped him and changed direction.
“Not interested.”
“Miss! Miss! I’m famous! I’m a renowned director. If you don’t audition for this project, you’ll regret it for life! It’s your chance for overnight fame—give it some thought!”
“Not considering it.”
Annoyed, Chen Ruowen recalled there was a security office at the next intersection. Once she reached it, she’d make sure this eccentric old fraud was escorted out of the film base.
Security was getting lax these days—how could anyone just walk in?
“Miss! I’m not a con artist, please listen—ow!”
A few young men appeared out of nowhere and pushed Cheng Sheng aside just as he tried to grab Chen Ruowen, anxiously scrutinizing her displeased expression.
“Miss… Miss Chen, are you alright?”
Chen Ruowen shook her head and pointed at Cheng Sheng. “Where did this old man come from?”
The young men looked at each other, clearly unsure how to answer.
Just then, the director of ‘Imperial Harem’ arrived, first obsequiously inquiring about Chen Ruowen’s well-being, then turning to scold the old man rubbing his waist—only for his expression to change drastically.
“Director Cheng…? Is that really you?”
Cheng Sheng waved his hand, still rubbing his back, as if the situation was too complicated to explain. Director Du of ‘Imperial Harem’ immediately smacked each of the young men.
“When you push someone, pay attention! What if Director Cheng got hurt?!”
Director Cheng? Was this old fraud really a director? From Director Du’s tone, not just any director, but someone of higher seniority? An actual, reputable director?
But why did his recruiting style resemble a street flyer for swimming gyms?
Chen Ruowen was puzzled.
“He’s really a director?” she asked, pointing at Cheng Sheng. “He looks more like a scam artist to me.”
Director Du’s facial muscles twitched, barely suppressing a laugh. He then helped Cheng Sheng over to Chen Ruowen and formally introduced them.
“This is Cheng Sheng, Director Cheng—a pioneer of domestic fantasy dramas.” He turned to Cheng Sheng. “Director Cheng, this is the only daughter of Chairman Chen, Twin Stars’ future owner, Miss Chen Ruowen.”
Cheng Sheng? The so-called ‘number one in domestic fantasy’, whose every fantasy drama set a ratings record, but whose other genre films always flopped so badly even his relatives disowned him?
“So you’re the heiress…” Cheng Sheng muttered, somewhat discomfited, and once again handed his drawing to Chen Ruowen. “Miss, I really am a legitimate director. TV production—please learn more!”
