Chapter Three: Designing the Breeding House
Hoenn Region
This is Verdanturf Town in the Hoenn Region, a city where nature plays among the treetops. The entire town is akin to a forest, making Pokémon sightings a signature feature of the place.
Cheng opened his window and took a deep breath. The beautiful scene outside instantly lifted his spirits.
“Good morning, Chimecho.”
“Chime~ Chime~”
He had already let Chimecho out the night before, deciding that from now on it would stay outside, since Pokémon were much happier living in the open.
“Good morning, Abra.”
“...”
At that moment, Abra was leaning against the wall, eyes closed and head drooping. It was impossible to tell whether it was awake or still asleep.
After getting to know his two Pokémon in detail yesterday, Cheng decided to reopen his breeding house from today.
He quickly finished breakfast, then brought Chimecho and Abra downstairs. Although the ground floor wasn’t cluttered, it had stood empty for some time, and everything was coated in dust.
“Come out, Super Broom.” Cheng summoned the Super Broom he had won from the system’s lottery.
This broom was unlike any ordinary one; it was made from vibrant green leaves. Cheng had worried the leaves might fall off before cleaning was done, but his concerns proved unfounded. The Super Broom’s cleaning power was impressive—after sweeping, the floor was spotless, almost as if it had been mopped.
“As expected, anything from the system is top quality!” Cheng exclaimed.
An hour later, the store was immaculate. Chimecho had tried to help, but its unusual body wasn’t much use. Still, with Chimecho keeping him company, time seemed to pass quickly. As for Abra...
“Heh...”
But Abra was still very young and limited in its abilities. If things didn’t improve, Cheng would have to be less forgiving in the future. However, reality would prove otherwise, as he would later discover.
Once the cleaning was done, Cheng sorted out all the usable items left in the house. He suddenly realized there was almost no equipment—just a few empty shelves and a counter.
He made a list of things he’d need to prepare next.
First were a large number of Pokémon Eggs. Obtaining eggs through official channels wasn’t easy, especially since Cheng could only purchase psychic-type Pokémon, which made things even more challenging.
He also needed devices to store Pokémon Eggs: first, specialized containers for selling the eggs; second, stands to hold the eggs properly in the shop.
Then there were Poké Balls—customers buying eggs or Pokémon might need them.
Lastly, there was the matter of food for the Pokémon. Ordinary food would be needed in large quantities. He’d also have to make Pokéblocks, which required a Pokéblock machine and a stockpile of Berries.
All in all, the total costs would be substantial—far more than Cheng could afford.
Just as he was fretting over this, the system issued a new task.
“Ding! Host’s needs detected. Mission panel activated.”
“Ding! New mission available.”
“Mission One: Acquire a full set of Pokémon breeding equipment and set up your breeding house. Reward: 1,000 achievement points.”
Cheng felt a headache coming on at this task. While 1,000 achievement points were tempting, he simply didn’t have that kind of money.
“Ding! Host’s lack of funds detected. Issuing Mission Two.”
“Mission Two: Capture Pokémon in the wild. Any Pokémon caught will be bought back by the system at official prices. Mission duration: three days.”
Hearing this, Cheng’s mood improved at once. If he could capture enough Pokémon in three days, his money troubles would be over. The system really was considerate.
“System, can you tell me the buyback rates?”
“Certainly. Here are the Pokémon buyback standards:
Light Red: 2,000 League Coins
Red: 3,000
Deep Red: 4,000
Light Orange: 6,000
Orange: 8,000
Deep Orange: 10,000
Light Yellow: 20,000
Yellow: 50,000
Deep Yellow: 80,000
Light Green: 200,000
Green: 400,000
Deep Green: 800,000
Light Cyan: 2,000,000
Cyan: 5,000,000
Deep Cyan: 8,000,000
Light Blue: 20,000,000
Blue: 50,000,000
Deep Blue: 100,000,000
Light Purple: 1,000,000,000
Purple: 5,000,000,000
Deep Purple: 10,000,000,000
Additionally, prices multiply based on rarity:
Ordinary Pokémon: standard price
Rare Pokémon: double
Epic Pokémon: triple
Legendary Pokémon: tenfold”
Cheng did a quick calculation based on his two Pokémon. Chimecho was yellow and rare, making it worth 100,000 League Coins. Abra was light blue and rare, totaling 40 million. Altogether, he had over 40 million, which made him quite happy. But when he thought about Rayquaza, which would be at least 500 million as a blue, legendary Pokémon, his heart ached.
He glanced at the purple-tier prices—truly astronomical. Did such Pokémon even exist? If so, they must be legendary. Out of reach, for sure.
Still, while high-tier Pokémon were hard to find, orange and yellow ones were much more common. Catching one would yield about 10,000 coins; with 100, he’d have a million.
Thinking of this, Cheng was eager to set out and start catching Pokémon, but first, he needed to make proper preparations.
He bought enough food for three days, stocked up on ordinary Poké Balls, and packed everything before heading out with Chimecho. As for Abra, he placed it in its Poké Ball—he wasn’t about to leave the little one at home, since its teleportation ability could land it anywhere in a blink.
Cheng’s destination was the forest outside Verdanturf Town. Part of the surrounding woods was a Pokémon reserve where capturing was forbidden, but he chose an area where catching wild Pokémon was allowed.
And so, with his storage backpack, Chimecho, and Abra, Cheng set off on his adventure.
