Chapter 9: Swept Away in One Fell Swoop
This was a drama directed by Ma Jun! This was a play where success was the only option—failure meant death.
To ensure everything unfolded as planned, Ma Jun, with the support of Lu Qichang and Huang Zhicheng, had arranged for his men to keep a close watch on Yi Yongxiao and everyone around him. At the same time, in his rented apartment, Ma Jun tirelessly scribbled notes and diagrams, striving to leave no detail overlooked.
Three days later, a desperate Liu Jianming, filled with both hope and anxiety, handed over the evidence he had gathered on Han Chen’s crimes to Ma Jun. It had not been an easy task—fortunately, R trusted Liu Jianming deeply, which allowed him to obtain what Ma Jun needed after much effort.
Ma Jun examined every piece of evidence with great care, noting that the only thing missing were records of Liu Jianming's own dealings with Han Chen. This did not surprise Ma Jun; he had anticipated as much. He simply smiled at Liu Jianming. “On the evening of the fourteenth, you can take R and leave. R will believe Han Chen is in Thailand. Once you go, never come back.”
Liu Jianming agreed, excitement and relief mingling in his heart, then returned to prepare.
As for Han Chen, at the last moment before boarding a plane to Thailand, he was secretly brought to the police station by men sent by Huang Zhicheng. After Huang Zhicheng explained Yi Yongxiao’s plan, and realizing there was no possibility of reconciliation between himself and Yi Yongxiao, Han Chen had no choice but to agree to become a state witness.
Finally, the night of the fourteenth arrived. As planned, Huang Zhicheng and Lu Qichang led a large contingent of officers in a bold move to arrest Yi Yongxiao at his place of transaction.
Ma Jun led another group, deploying his men to capture the killers who had been sent to murder Guohua and others.
One of those killers was personally dispatched by Yi Yongxiao’s uncle, with the method chosen being live burial!
Having arranged surveillance early on, Ma Jun was fully aware of Yi Yongxiao’s uncle’s movements. He personally led more than a dozen men in pursuit by car.
Night always brings out the wildest imaginings in people—the beautiful and the wicked alike.
At a crossroads, Ma Jun’s car crossed paths with those of Yi Yongxiao’s uncle and Yi Yongxiao himself. The three cars tailing Ma Jun’s group also appeared from different directions, following closely behind Yi Yongxiao’s uncle’s vehicle, sometimes near, sometimes far.
Inside his car, Ma Jun sat in the passenger seat, a cigarette between his lips, inspecting his pistol.
They drove through several streets before turning onto a road with little traffic. Another twenty minutes passed and even fewer cars remained ahead.
Ma Jun frowned—if they continued trailing, their target would surely notice. The open road ahead meant there was no chance to wait for them to dispose of the bodies before making the arrest.
“All units, attention!” Ma Jun spoke into the radio. “On my command, Cars Two and Three, be ready to intercept and force the target to stop! Be careful—they’re armed!”
Every second seemed to stretch, Ma Jun acutely aware of his own heartbeat and breath. There was no room for error in this operation.
Suddenly, the target vehicle began to slow and veered toward the roadside fields.
“Move!”
At Ma Jun’s order, the three cars accelerated, closing in with a series of loud crashes that forced the target vehicle to a halt.
All officers exited, using their cars as cover, drawing their pistols.
Ma Jun crouched behind a car door, not even showing his head above the window as he shouted, “Everyone inside, come out now! Hands on your heads, kneel down! We are the police!”
Inside the car, Yi Yongxiao’s uncle exchanged a panicked glance with his two men.
“Boss, what do we do?” One of his men drew his gun, tense.
After a moment’s silence, Yi Yongxiao’s uncle also drew his weapon. “There’s no way out if we’re caught. We fight!”
The car doors flew open and all three sprang out, crouching and firing their guns wildly.
Ma Jun’s men needed no further orders; they returned fire immediately.
Ma Jun knew his marksmanship was poor and had no desire to die in vain. He simply raised his gun and fired blindly in their direction.
With the police outnumbering them, it wasn’t long before the three lost the ability to resist and were swiftly apprehended. Only three officers suffered minor injuries, while among the criminals, one was dead and the other two gravely wounded.
As the scene was secured, Ma Jun received good news over his earpiece from the other teams. In high spirits, he led five officers, reinforced by more men, to the next location.
At the police station, Yi Yongxiao shot a venomous glare before swaggering out.
Huang Zhicheng and Lu Qichang exchanged a smile as they listened to Ma Jun’s updates. They immediately gathered their team and set out.
At a large street-side eatery, Yi Yongxiao and several henchmen were arrogantly preparing to teach a lesson to the bodyguards who had once worked for Yi Kun. These men had taken bribes from R, which had made it so easy for Liu Jianming to kill Yi Kun back then.
In the original story, Liu Jianming saved R’s life, and at that time, Yi Yongxiao had no idea his plan had a fatal flaw, a testament to his confidence—he didn’t even wait for confirmation from his men before taking lethal action.
Ma Jun understood this clearly and would not let the opportunity slip by.
Several blocks around the eatery were already swarming with police, and officers with binoculars were stationed in apartments across the street, watching Yi Yongxiao’s every move.
Ma Jun, Lu Qichang, and Huang Zhicheng met at a street corner, speaking little as they waited for news.
Three gunshots rang out, followed by a report from an officer: “Yi Yongxiao has made his move!”
“All units, go!” Lu Qichang ordered.
Multiple cars sped to the eatery, surrounding it, with snipers at the ready.
Yi Yongxiao stared in disbelief at the swarm of officers outside.
Moments later, he seized undercover officer Luo Ji, pressing a gun to his head and slowly moving forward, shouting, “One more step and I’ll kill him!”
“Yongxiao, stop resisting!” Lu Qichang shouted. “If you don’t surrender, the snipers won’t show mercy!”
Yi Yongxiao shook his head and laughed maniacally. “I can’t believe you chased me all the way here!”
“Yi Yongxiao, we’ve been watching your every move,” Ma Jun said with a smile. “The killers you sent have all been captured. Your uncle? I caught him myself—he should be in the hospital by now. What pride do you have left?”
Yi Yongxiao bit his lower lip, his chest heaving, his expression changing rapidly. Suddenly, he kicked Luo Ji aside, tossed down his gun, and raised his hands above his head.
The officers swarmed in, cuffing everyone. Lu Qichang, Huang Zhicheng, and Ma Jun exchanged satisfied looks, handed out cigarettes, and took a slow, deep drag.
Back at the station, Han Chen approached anxiously. “Well, Ah Cheng?”
Huang Zhicheng fixed Han Chen with a long look, sighed, and walked past him.
Ma Jun came up behind, and as Han Chen stared in shock, produced a pair of handcuffs and secured him. “Sorry, Brother Chen, but we received a report from Liu Jianming, suspecting you of drug trafficking and other crimes. We’ll need you to come with us.”
A few days later, Ma Jun stood before a sea of reporters, spirited and triumphant, delivering a speech about how he had orchestrated the entire operation and taken down the largest triad in Hong Kong.
