Chapter 103: The Doctor and His Daughter
The blushing sun rose slowly from the east, its radiance gradually spreading across the land. Despite it being early morning, the summer breeze was already thick with intense heat, offering no reprieve of coolness.
In a secluded spot within the woodlands bordering Raccoon City, a few simply constructed rooms were visible. At that moment, a voice drifted from within.
"This is Raccoon City Channel 7 with your weather forecast. It is 6:10 AM, but the temperature has already reached 32 degrees Celsius. This unprecedented heatwave continues. Today’s weather will be sunny with occasional breezes from the west. Fortunately, the pollen count in the air is only..."
Ma Jun was dressed in a white short-sleeved shirt, casual shorts, and breathable mesh sneakers. With his vibrant, neatly cropped hair and non-prescription glasses perched on his nose, he looked like a sunny, wholesome young man. Of course, that was only how he appeared.
He shut down the computer on the table and turned to look at Qian Xuduo behind him. "Are you ready? Let's go!"
"Always ready!" Qian Xuduo wasn't wearing combat gear either, opting for ordinary summer attire. He wore a broad smile, seemingly quite looking forward to the upcoming mission.
The two left the building, walked to the roadside, and scanned their surroundings for a moment. Seeing no vehicles or pedestrians, Qian Xuduo retrieved a black SUV from his storage ring. Acting as the driver, he opened the door for Ma Jun, and the two drove off.
"Boss, I heard on the news that the Raccoon City Police Department has already arrested some strange individuals—zombies, to be exact. It seems they still have no idea what's going on. You have to say, this Umbrella Corporation is truly black-hearted," Qian Xuduo said while driving.
"As long as they are human, their hearts are black," Ma Jun lit a cigar and said indifferently. "Why worry about that? We are even more black-hearted than Umbrella."
"Heh heh, to them, you are God, Boss. How could they compare to you?" Qian Xuduo chuckled.
"Enough, stop with the nonsense and focus on driving!"
The car sped forward. Since it was still early, the roads were sparse with traffic. After about twenty minutes, they arrived at the road beneath the Mayor’s Bridge.
Qian Xuduo glanced around, slowly pulled the car into a temporary parking spot, turned on the hazard lights, and got out with Ma Jun. He grabbed some tools, popped the hood, and began to make a show of fixing the engine.
"Boss, are we waiting for someone?"
"That’s right!" Ma Jun squatted by the roadside, smoking, and looked toward the highway. "An Umbrella Corporation convoy will be coming by shortly. We’ll follow them and pull off a heist."
"That sounds great!" Qian Xuduo tapped away at the engine, laughing. "I’ll definitely be the first into the fray to clear any obstacles for you, Boss!"
After waiting for about twenty minutes, Qian Xuduo looked up, squinting at the glaring sky. "Boss, we have a situation. There’s a helicopter! It has... the Umbrella Corporation logo on it!"
"Finally! Get in the car! Follow them quietly!" Ma Jun flicked away his cigarette butt and quickly started the car with Qian Xuduo.
Soon, a convoy consisting of more than a dozen specialized security SUVs, accompanied by a helicopter, approached. The convoy moved in an orderly fashion, maintaining uniform spacing between vehicles and traveling at high speed.
Once the convoy entered the city, one vehicle detached and headed down a different road.
"Old Four, drop me off here. That car is headed toward Raccoon City Elementary School. You keep following the main convoy. They’ll likely go to the residential area to pick someone up. If you see them picking up a middle-aged man in a wheelchair, take action—abduct him! Then wait for my orders," Ma Jun said suddenly.
"Understood!"
The car pulled over immediately. After Ma Jun stepped out, he looked left and right before jogging across the road. Entering an alleyway and seeing no one around, he utilized his inner strength to scale the walls and leap across rooftops, taking a shortcut toward Raccoon City Elementary School.
By now, the city’s inhabitants were already at work or school. Inside the elementary school, students were in class when, suddenly, two men appeared and took a young female student away. The two parties clearly knew each other; otherwise, the school would not have easily allowed them to take a student.
Exiting the school, the two men in suits led the girl to their car and drove off.
Just after turning onto the main road and traveling a few dozen meters, a cement mixer suddenly appeared, losing control and slamming into the black SUV, causing a horrific crash. The cement truck caused a massive disaster, yet it did not stop, continuing on its out-of-control path. Even more bizarrely, there was no one else on the street.
Ma Jun appeared on the roof of a five-story building at the street corner. Seeing the wrecked car, his eyes lit up. He jumped straight down, crouched to absorb the impact, and walked over unhurriedly.
The car had flipped but had not exploded. The two men inside were already dead, blood dripping from the shattered windows.
Arriving at the rear door, Ma Jun pulled with all his might, ripping the door right off. He crouched down and saw the little girl held by her seatbelt, her hands twitching slightly in a semi-conscious state.
Rescuing the girl, Ma Jun carried the unconscious child away.
Not long after, having walked two blocks, the girl woke up. She opened her eyes hazily and whispered, "Who are you? Where am I?"
"Hello, Angie. I’m Ma Jun. You were just in a car accident. Your father asked me to save you. Don't worry, I’ll take you to see him. Everything will be fine!" Ma Jun wore a warm, gentle smile, appearing highly approachable and full of deception.
"Thank you, Ma Jun!" Angie said, her pronunciation of the Chinese name slightly stiff. She clearly did not doubt his identity. After a moment, she frowned and whispered, "Can you tell me what happened? Why did you come to pick me up in such a hurry?"
"Screech... Boom..."
Various sounds erupted on the street as countless vehicles lost control and collided. Explosions lit up the sky, and people screamed and wailed.
Strange, grotesque people appeared, biting those around them.
"It seems I don’t need to explain—you probably know what’s going on," Ma Jun said, looking at Angie.
Angie didn't speak, staring at the chaotic street, lost in thought.
The communicator in his pocket rang. Ma Jun took it out and answered.
"Boss, I’ve got the target. Where are you? Raccoon City has fallen into chaos. I’m coming to get you!" Qian Xuduo said.
"Wait for me at the entrance of the Mayor’s Bridge. For now, let the guy next to you listen to the call!"
"Okay!"
"Who are you? How is my daughter?" A panicked, anxious voice came through.
"Hello, Dr. Charles Ashford. You and your daughter are both safe for now. We will take you to a temporary base shortly. Please cooperate!" Ma Jun said with a smile, turning to look at Angie. "Come on, Angie, say hello to your father!"
"Daddy, it’s me, Angie!"
"Angie! Angie, are you okay?"
"I’m fine. Big Brother Ma Jun saved me. I’m okay!"
Not giving the father and daughter more time to talk, Ma Jun added, "Charles, please cooperate with us now. You know the danger of the T-virus; the whole city is in chaos. I will bring Angie to see you soon!"
"Fine, I understand," Charles said in a heavy voice. His daughter was in the hands of this person, and he wasn't a fool; if these people dared to go against the Umbrella Corporation, he certainly had to obey.
"Alright, Angie, let’s go find your father!" Ma Jun hung up the phone and said with a smile.
"Okay!" Angie replied happily, completely unaware that the person in front of her was no good man.
