Chapter Six: Unconventional Deviance

Under the sunlight, on the grass, the short and chubby thin spirit coin wobbled slightly, then sat cross-legged on the grass with its stubby little legs. “Well, the spirit house has this peculiar trait: it disappears when the sun comes out, but don’t worry, it will reappear at night!”
“……”
Are you serious? How is this any different from being homeless!?
“I don’t believe you for a second!”
Tang Wange made a swift decision, grabbed her backpack, and started walking toward the street.
“I was a ghost to begin with.” Zhao He stretched out his two little stubby hands, shrugging helplessly. Then he slowly climbed up, looking up at Tang Wange’s retreating figure. “Flat chest! Where are you going?”
Flat chest…?
Tang Wange’s face flushed bright red as she quickened her pace. “Go to hell!”
“…”
He really is adorable.
Despite the morning chaos, Tang Wange still arrived at the classroom on time.
No sooner had she sat down than she heard faint knocking at the window beside her ear.
Frowning, she turned her head, and the moment she saw what was outside, her eyes widened, and she hurriedly covered her mouth, nearly screaming!
Outside the window, a palm-sized spirit coin was stuck on the glass, its short, chubby little claw scratching at the window nonstop…
“Good morning, Wange~”
Her deskmate, Ling Fei, also carrying her backpack, sat down beside her. After waiting a moment without a response from Tang Wange, curiosity got the better of her and she glanced out the window. “What’s wrong? What are you looking at?”
“N-nothing!”
Tang Wange quickly turned away, trying to block Ling Fei’s view.
The more she blocked, the more curious Ling Fei became.
Laughing, Ling Fei pressed a hand on her shoulder, tiptoed, and caught sight outside with a single glance.
Her eyes lit up as if she’d uncovered a huge secret. “Tang Wange! You really are hiding something from me!!”
“You… you saw it all?” Tang Wange slumped, utterly despairing.
“Haha! I knew it!”
Ling Fei looked around cautiously before lowering her voice. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone—you like Lin Chao.”
Lin… Chao?
Turning back to the window, Tang Wange saw the boy in the oversized school uniform standing alone under the basketball hoop, dribbling a basketball with one shoulder bag strap slung over his shoulder.
Lin Chao was probably the ideal first love figure in every girl’s heart at this age. Wherever he appeared, even the air smelled faintly of fresh soap.
She no longer saw Zhao He’s shadow, so it was no wonder Ling Fei was mistaken.

During break, Tang Wange went to the restroom, humming a little tune while washing her hands. She grabbed a piece of toilet paper to dry her hands, but suddenly noticed the texture felt off…
Her humming died in her throat.
Looking down slowly, she saw resting in her palm, slightly damp but stubbornly wiggling its short, plump little claw—the spirit coin Zhao He.
“Flat chest, you’re so cruel!” He seemed genuinely aggrieved.
Tang Wange felt stuck. This was school, with so many people coming and going. If anyone saw her carrying a spirit coin, she would be labeled a freak without a doubt!
Plus, this spirit coin was capable of moving on its own. What if someone saw it and she got dragged off for scientific experiments?
With that thought, she decisively slipped into a stall and locked the door behind her.
“This is the first time in my ghost life that I’ve entered the girls’ restroom.”
Zhao He climbed up her arm to her shoulder and wobbled his little legs as he sat down.
“Shh!”
Tang Wange lowered her voice, her expression tense. “You don’t want to get caught either, right?”
“I do…” He raised a claw. “I want to eat meat. I’m hungry.”
“…Is teasing you this fun???"
“Then do as I say, or no meat for you!” Tang Wange played her trump card.
“Okay.” He reached out a stubby little hand and pinched the flesh on her neck.
Her face flushed as she grabbed him, folding him up in a few swift moves, then tucked him into her pocket.
“So violent.”
“Shut up…”
In the next stall, a female teacher sat dazedly on the toilet, lost in thought. Are students under so much pressure these days that they talk to themselves in the restroom?
Zhao He was surprisingly obedient, staying quietly in Tang Wange’s pocket all morning without incident.
But at lunch, he was less well-behaved.
Feeling his restlessness, she slipped her hand into her pocket, trying to calm him down, but the little fellow even bit her! Though just a paper sheet, the bite still hurt.
Hurriedly finishing her meal, she went to buy ten yuan worth of meat pieces.
“Hey Wange, where are you taking that meat?” Ling Fei asked, returning after washing her lunchbox, eyes full of curiosity.
“I… I’m bringing it to the stray cats on campus.”
“Cats? I’m scared of those things, so I’m not going with you.”
“Fine~”
Once out of the classroom, Tang Wange headed straight for the rooftop.
The rooftop had no classrooms or offices, only computer rooms, so no students came by at this time.

Most importantly, the stairwell corner near the rooftop was so dark that no light reached it.
In the shadowy corridor corner, Tang Wange crouched hugging her knees, looking up at Zhao He, who was half-leaning against the wall with hair tousled and shirtless, munching on meat pieces.
“Is it tasty?” If he said no, she’d be furious.
“Mm-hmm.”
Zhao He nodded obediently, then gave her a satisfied smile. “You’re so kind.”
Anyone who feeds him meat must be a good person; this little guy is so easy to win over.
Tang Wange blushed awkwardly and lowered her gaze to avoid looking at him.
Suddenly, he bent down, his cool fingers gently lifting her chin. She froze slightly, tilting her head up to meet his handsome face so close…
Her heart pounded wildly.
“Do you want some? Let me feed you, okay?”
He smiled, showing his little tiger teeth, lifting a piece of meat to her lips.
“…” Could she not eat it?
Tang Wange gave up, opening her mouth to bite the meat piece. Before she could swallow, Zhao He’s face suddenly grew larger.
Even in the dark, she could clearly see his handsome, radiant face, a faint smile playing on his lips.
He playfully and naturally snatched the meat from her mouth, his eyes curving like crescent moons, fully content. “Food stolen from others is always the sweetest~”
“…” He really is a special kind of weirdo.
“Are you sick or what?” Tang Wange wanted to roll her eyes.
“Can you cure me?” His eyes sparkled like stars as he lowered his head slightly, lightly kissing the strands of hair on her forehead. “Maybe then my illness will be gone.”
Greasy, and still smelling like meat.
Tang Wange didn’t have time to react before her face flushed deep red, her eyes filled with a trace of stunned disbelief!
At that moment, the door connecting the rooftop and stairwell suddenly opened, flooding the corner with sunlight.
Zhao He instantly transformed into a thin spirit coin, fluttering down in front of Tang Wange.
The meat pieces he had been holding scattered all over the ground.
She remained frozen, staring blankly at the spirit coin that was once Zhao He.
After a long while, she snapped back to reality, feeling somewhat at a loss as she looked toward the person who had opened the door…
