Chapter Thirteen: Forbidden Love-Struck Mind?

Tang Wange stood there, dazed as if about to be engulfed by the moment, then suddenly pulled herself back to reason and turned her head, not daring to look at him any longer.
“The school clinic is here!”
As soon as she glimpsed the sign for the clinic, it was as if she had been rescued. She swiftly slipped out of his embrace and urgently pressed her hand on the door handle. “Thank you so much today, Lin Chao!”
“You’re being overly formal; it makes you seem distant,” Lin Chao said, his gaze fixed on her back.
“No, that’s not true. You’re overthinking it. I’ve always been polite!” Tang Wange laughed awkwardly and nervously touched the bridge of her nose. “You should get back to class. I’m fine!”
“Mm.” He responded softly but did not move.
“So... I’m going in? Bye!”
“Okay.”
He remained standing where he was, watching the clinic door open and close.
The hallway instantly fell silent.
Sunlight streamed in through the windows in winding patterns.
Beneath the areas the light could not reach, shadows spread wildly like ink wash, rapidly extending and intertwining over Lin Chao’s silhouette.
“Reckless fool,” Lin Chao glanced once and calmly turned away as usual.
Each step he took pressed down on the vast shadows, causing ripples to form.
The sunlight grew stronger.
In the bright hallway, the boy and the ink-like shadows vanished without a trace...
Sss—
Inside Tang Wange’s pocket, Zhao He suddenly sensed something. It stretched out its short, chubby little hand, cautiously poking its head out to look at the closed clinic door.
A powerful force emanated, strangely familiar to it...
“There’s nothing serious. Just some minor abrasions on your neck; I’ve disinfected and bandaged them. You have some bruises on your arms and legs. Rest here for a while, and I will inform your homeroom teacher of the details.”
The school nurse advised, pulling the curtains to block out the glaring sunlight.
“Thank you, teacher!”
Once the nurse left, Zhao He eagerly climbed out of Tang Wange’s pocket.
It plopped down on her stomach, crossing its arms with a knowing air. “Don’t you think Lin Chao’s behavior was off?”
“...No.” Tang Wange looked up at the ceiling and shook her head decisively.
If not for Lin Chao’s timely arrival, she might already be lying in the hospital ICU now...

“Think carefully. How did he know you were in the equipment room? And how did he know you were in danger? He should have been in class at that time!” Zhao He’s tone was unusually serious. “Also, just now, I clearly felt a strong force outside the door.”
“Aren’t you overthinking this a bit?” Tang Wange poked its large waist gently, whispering, “He risked himself to save us, you know...”
She was muttering when the paper figure she was poking suddenly swelled up!
In the blink of an eye, the tiny spirit token transformed into a dashing young man.
He rested one hand against the side of her ear.
Her finger was firmly pressing on his chest!
“Tang Wange, please put away your love-struck brain.”
“Zhao He! Why did you suddenly turn human?”
A flush instantly spread across her face, coloring her ears.
Ignoring her embarrassment, Zhao He leaned in closer. “Tang Wange, you cannot like him.”
Cannot what?
Her eyes widened, her thoughts froze, and she couldn’t look away from his face...
His hair slid over his shoulders, the ends brushing lightly against her collar.
“Why... why not...?” she fluttered her eyelashes.
“I suspect he’s not human.”
“You’re the one who’s not human...” The warmth rising in her heart suddenly chilled halfway.
“I really am not human.”
“...”
Tang Wange rolled her eyes.
Why was this conversation so strange? But it made sense!
“Anyway, until I figure out exactly what he is, you must stay away from him.” Zhao He raised his hand and tapped her nose.
Perhaps even he didn’t realize how intimate that gesture was!
“Alright, alright! Got it!”
Tang Wange pushed him away awkwardly and sat up.
A cold finger suddenly touched her neck and shoulder, gently tracing the bruises there.
She froze for a moment.
But soon, she sensed the faint guilt hidden beneath that cold touch.

“It’s nothing serious—just a little scratch. It doesn’t hurt at all. I’m not blaming you for not stepping in sooner. After all, you can’t reveal your identity recklessly. Shapeshifting in front of ordinary people would cause big trouble! I was just too scared and called your name…”
Even though she was the one going through all this, she was trying to comfort him!
“It won’t happen again.”
“Huh?” She was taken aback, not understanding what he meant.
“I won’t let you get hurt again.”
Those words, like a vow, mingled with the gentle breeze, softly stirring the white curtains.
Playful sunlight filtered through the gaps, shining on his handsome face!
The charming young man turned back into a thin spirit token, spinning as it fell into her cupped hands.
Her heart beat vividly!
Tang Wange couldn’t help but lift the corners of her mouth, her eyes curving into a smile...
*Ring—*
As the class bell rang, the hallway buzzed with noisy voices again.
In the teachers’ office, homeroom teacher Mr. Cao wore an unusually serious expression.
“Tang Wange, I have already contacted the parents of Song Jing and Lin Chao, asking them to come to my office before tonight’s evening study session.”
“So you also need to get in touch with your aunt or uncle and have them come by. Given the recent serious incidents, the parents must sit down together and discuss the matter thoroughly to resolve it once and for all.”
“Yes, teacher.”
Leaving the office, Tang Wange leaned against the hallway wall, feeling a headache coming on.
Since moving out of her aunt’s old apartment building, her aunt and uncle hadn’t contacted her again. How could she possibly ask them to take time out of their busy schedules to attend a parent meeting?
But ethically, the only people she could call family were them. Who else could she turn to?
As she was worrying, a timely complaint came from her pocket—Zhao He’s voice whining, “Flat chest, I’m hungry again.”
“I’m busy worrying right now; I don’t have time to find you food...” Tang Wange frowned, about to refuse.
Suddenly, a bright idea struck, and she made a complete 180-degree change in attitude!
“Zhao He! Help me out! After this is over, I’ll take you to eat barbecue! The place you saw on your phone the other day—Volcanic Stone Barbecue. How about that?”
“What do you want me to help with?”
Zhao He doubted it would be easy to get that meat into his stomach.
“You’re coming to the parent meeting tonight for me!” Tang Wange’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
