Chapter 16: Bonds of Loyalty
The conversation between Xu Xuan and Fahai lingered in the air. Not far away, in a concealed corner, Little White and Little Green listened intently to every word.
A trace of worry flickered in Little White’s eyes as she gently bit her lower lip. Little Green’s face was flushed with anger, her fists clenched tightly, ready to strike.
Little Green whispered, “That Fahai is truly stubborn. Since when have we ever brought harm to the human world? He always wrongfully blames us.”
Little White sighed softly. “Little Green, Fahai is a disciple of the Buddhist order. Deep in his heart, he harbors an ingrained prejudice against our kind. He only sees the surface of demons and refuses to believe that among us, there is both good and evil.”
Fuming, Little Green said, “Sister, Xu Gongzi actually dared to confront Fahai for our sake. Isn’t he afraid Fahai might retaliate against him?”
Little White gazed in the direction Xu Xuan had departed, her eyes filled with emotion as she spoke gently, “Xu Xuan is a man of deep loyalty and affection. He understands our true hearts, which is why he risked everything to defend us.”
Little Green stomped her foot. “Sister, what shall we do now? Fahai certainly won’t let this go. He’ll come looking for trouble.”
After a moment of contemplation, Little White said, “Little Green, we cannot let Xu Xuan face Fahai alone. We must strengthen ourselves as well. Xu Xuan is only at the Qi Refining stage; his power is still far from sufficient.”
Indeed, Fahai had already reached the Void Cultivation realm. Even if the two sisters combined their strength, it was uncertain whether they could overcome him. It was truly a troubling predicament.
Little Green nodded. “You’re right, sister. But how shall we enhance our power?”
Little White replied, “We will continue seeking spiritual treasures to cultivate, and we can also seek guidance from some elders on cultivation methods. Once we become strong enough, Fahai won’t be able to harm us so easily.”
Looking at Little White, a determined light sparkled in Little Green’s eyes. “Sister, I trust you. But we must also watch over Xu Xuan. Though courageous, his strength remains limited.”
Little White nodded slightly. “Of course. Xu Xuan cares for us deeply; we must protect him well.”
At that moment, Little White seemed to recall something and spoke softly, “Little Green, in truth, Fahai’s words hold some truth. Our kind struggles to survive in this world. Many demons indeed have committed countless evils, which has caused humans and cultivators like Fahai to view us with hostility. We must set an example and prove through our actions that demons can choose goodness too.”
Tilting her head thoughtfully, Little Green said, “You have a point, sister. But humans and cultivators also have many wicked ones who harm innocent demons. Why does no one hold them accountable?”
Little White gently stroked Little Green’s hair. “Little Green, the ways of this world are often complicated. We cannot control others’ actions; all we can do is start with ourselves. If we do well, perhaps we can slowly change how people perceive demons.”
Little Green nodded, half understanding. “I see, sister. No matter what, we will never let Fahai harm Xu Gongzi.”
The two stepped out from the shadows, gazing over the bustling streets of Jianye with hearts heavy yet steadfast. They knew that on this challenging path of cultivation, the bond they shared with Xu Xuan would be the source of their strength against all adversity.
