Volume 1, Chapter 5: The Truth Approaches as Shadows Loom
The dilapidated wooden door creaked in the night wind, while the dim oil lamp flickered, casting mottled shadows.
Lin Fan paced back and forth within the cramped room, his footsteps crunching against the rough dirt floor. His brows were tightly knitted, and his heart churned with deep, turbulent unease. Elder Zhang’s investigation results had yet to be released, and the threat from Sun Hu still echoed in his ears. All of this weighed upon him with an inexplicable sense of oppression.
"Lin Fan, don't worry too much," Xia Jiang’s gentle voice sounded in the silent room, like a breeze brushing against Lin Fan’s anxious heart. She handed him a cup of warm tea; the fragrance rose in curls, carrying a faint hint of sweetness.
Lin Fan took the cup, the warmth of it calming him slightly. He took a small sip, the tea sliding down his throat into his stomach and bringing a touch of comfort. "Thank you, Xia Jiang," he murmured, his tone tinged with exhaustion.
However, the situation proved far more complex than Lin Fan had imagined. The next morning, Elder Zhang summoned everyone once more. Lin Fan and Xia Jiang stood to the side, feeling apprehensive, while Sun Hu wore a look of triumph, followed by several outer-sect disciples with shifty expressions.
"After investigation, Sun Hu’s words have been verified. Lin Fan did indeed steal spirit herbs from the Medicine Pavilion," Elder Zhang’s authoritative voice echoed through the hall, every word striking Lin Fan’s heart like a heavy hammer.
Lin Fan stared in disbelief, his eyes widening. He snapped his head toward Sun Hu, only to see a cold, sinister smile curling the corners of the other man’s mouth. The outer-sect disciples behind him echoed the claims, weaving a web of lies that sounded chillingly convincing.
"I didn't! They are all lying!" Lin Fan retorted in anger, but his voice, though echoing in the hall, sounded feeble. He felt an invisible pressure enveloping him, making it nearly impossible to breathe.
"Elder, I have something to say!" A crisp voice broke the heavy atmosphere.
Xia Jiang stepped forward, her clear voice ringing through the hall like a thunderclap piercing the dense gloom. "Elder, I have something to say!" Her gaze was firm, looking straight at Elder Zhang without a hint of fear.
"Oh? And what insight does Miss Xia have?" Elder Zhang was slightly taken aback; he had not expected this seemingly fragile young woman to dare speak up.
Xia Jiang took a deep breath and said slowly, "Elder, please observe: the testimonies of these witnesses are full of holes. They claim to have seen Lin Fan enter the Medicine Pavilion, yet they cannot describe his attire at the time, and they cannot even align the timeline. Furthermore, they are all cronies of Sun Hu; their testimony is unworthy of belief."
Though Xia Jiang’s voice was soft, it was resolute, each word reaching everyone present with crystal clarity. Her gaze swept over Sun Hu and the outer-sect disciples, her eyes carrying a chill. The faces of Sun Hu and Qian Ning turned grim; they had not expected Xia Jiang to intervene and ruin their plans.
Elder Zhang’s gaze shifted between them, keenly capturing the flicker of panic in the eyes of Sun Hu and his companions. He pondered for a moment before speaking with authority, "Sun Hu, is what Miss Xia says true?"
Beads of cold sweat broke out on Sun Hu’s forehead. He stammered, "This... this..."
"Audacious!" Elder Zhang barked, causing Sun Hu to tremble. "You dare to deceive this Elder? Your crime is now doubled!"
Elder Zhang sternly reprimanded Sun Hu and the false witnesses. With their lies exposed, they all hung their heads, unable to utter a word. Lin Fan let out a sigh of relief and looked at Xia Jiang with gratitude. The surrounding disciples cast admiring glances at Lin Fan, impressed that he had remained composed in such a predicament and ultimately proven his innocence.
Seeing the plan fail, Qian Ning’s face turned livid. He glared fiercely at Lin Fan, his fists clenched so tightly that his nails dug deep into his flesh. He turned and left, leaving a chilling sentence echoing in the air: "Lin Fan, you just wait!"
Qian Ning’s sinister eyes remained fixed on Lin Fan’s retreating back, his heart churning like molten lava, the flames of resentment burning ever brighter. The humiliation of his failed scheme felt like a sharp thorn embedded in his heart. He squeezed his fists until his palms nearly bled, letting out a low, guttural growl: "Lin Fan, just you wait! I won't let you off!" He turned and hurried away, his figure disappearing into the dim corners.
The surrounding air seemed to freeze, permeated by a suffocating chill. Qian Ning found his inner circle of henchmen, his face dark and his tone icy. "Go, keep a close watch on Lin Fan. Find an opportunity and make him disappear for good!" The subordinates understood, their expressions turning ruthless.
At this moment, Lin Fan remained oblivious. He was busy with his daily chores as usual, holding a broom and meticulously sweeping fallen leaves from the courtyard. Sunlight filtered through the branches, casting mottled spots of light that illuminated his refined face. He hummed a soft tune, feeling at ease, completely unaware that danger was creeping closer step by step.
The courtyard was quiet, save for the rustling sound of the broom against the ground and the occasional chirp of a bird. The air was filled with the fragrance of earth mingled with a subtle scent of grass and trees. Lin Fan took a deep breath, savoring this rare tranquility, his heart at peace. He bent down to pick up a fallen maple leaf; its crimson color looked exceptionally vivid in his hand, like a burning flame.
Suddenly, a faint sound of footsteps came from behind. Lin Fan turned around instinctively... "Who's there?"
The sunset glow bathed the bluestone path of the Ancient Dao Sect, dyeing everything in a faint gold. Xia Jiang felt a lingering unease; an inexplicable premonition drove her to quicken her pace in search of Lin Fan. She wove through the bustling crowds and past the neatly arranged buildings, finally finding him in the secluded courtyard where the chore disciples lived.
Lin Fan was humming a tune, diligently sweeping the leaves. The sound of his broom was crisp and clear in the quiet evening. The sunset cast a warm halo over his slender figure. Seeing that Lin Fan was safe and sound, the tension in Xia Jiang’s heart finally snapped. She ran forward and threw herself into his arms.
The broom fell from Lin Fan’s hand with a soft thud. He was startled for a moment, but then he felt Xia Jiang’s care and dependency. He gently patted her back and comforted her in a soft voice, "It's alright, I'm here."
Xia Jiang held him tightly, burying her head in his chest, feeling the warmth and sense of security radiating from him. She greedily breathed in the faint, grassy scent on his clothes, as if it were enough to dispel all the unease in her heart.
The sun set, and the sky grew dim. Lin Fan and Xia Jiang walked side-by-side on the path back to their quarters, the evening breeze carrying a hint of chill. The woods beside the road rustled, and the chirping of insects rose and fell, sounding especially distinct in the quiet night.
Suddenly, a group of figures in black darted out from the woods, blocking their way. These people were clad in night-traveling gear, their faces covered by black cloth, revealing only their cold, icy eyes. Like ghosts in the dark of night, they exuded an aura of danger.
Lin Fan’s internal alarm bells rang loudly. He realized that trouble had arrived. He quickly pulled Xia Jiang behind him, scanning the black-clad figures with a guarded gaze, and demanded in a deep voice, "Who are you?"
The leader of the black-clad men let out a cold laugh, his voice low and raspy like the cry of a night owl, making one’s skin crawl. "The ones here to take your life."
Before the words had finished, the men in black lunged at them, their blades flashing with a cold light that cut through the silent night. Lin Fan acted with lightning speed, pushing Xia Jiang aside while drawing the sword at his waist to parry the attack. The piercing sound of metal clashing rang through the night, accompanied by a shower of sparks.
Lin Fan watched the attackers, his guard up. He leaned forward slightly, ready for battle. He whispered to Xia Jiang, "Be careful, protect yourself." Xia Jiang nodded, gripping her dagger, her gaze resolute.
"Attack together! Finish them off!" the leader commanded. The remaining men in black swarmed forward, surrounding Lin Fan and Xia Jiang.
Swords flashed, and the air turned murderous. Lin Fan took a deep breath, his eyes blazing like torches.
"Come then!"
