Lu Sui’s voice was stern. "Please open the door. I am a soldier, and I can take you to a safe base."

A voice sounded from within, trembling. "Are you really a soldier? How can you prove it?"

Lu Sui slid his military identification card through the gap in the door.

The girl took it, but before she could even look at it, a robust man snatched it away.

"A Major? Holy cow, a high-ranking officer!" The man’s expression instantly turned sycophantic. He glared at the girl and roared, "What are you staring at? Open the door!"

The girl shivered under his shout and unlocked the door with trembling hands.

Lu Sui entered first, followed by Shen Shiwei, and the others filed in behind them.

The girl quickly scanned the surroundings before locking the door again.

The moment the door latched, a group of zombies appeared at the intersection, chasing two men. The two men ran frantically for their lives, but were soon surrounded and swarmed by the zombies, who tore them apart and devoured them.

The convenience store was not small; the shelves were stocked with food and daily necessities. Beside the checkout counter sat two pots of oden, though there was little left but the broth at the bottom.

There had already been five people hiding here, and with the addition of Shen Shiwei’s group of five, the space suddenly felt cramped.

Shen Shiwei stood behind Shen Heng, quietly observing the people inside.

There were three men and two women.

One was clearly a store clerk, wearing a black apron bearing the store’s logo. There was the robust man and his companion, a tall, thin man. The other two, a man and a woman, were clearly close; they were sitting on the floor leaning against the wall, the girl cradling the boy in her arms.

Lu Sui reached out and retrieved his ID from the robust man’s hand, then put it away.

The robust man swept his eyes over them and said arrogantly, "Everything in this store is mine. I can let you eat a little, but there’s a price."

Lu Sui replied, "Name it."

"You’re a soldier, so you must know about the government’s rescue policies. I want you to tell us right now."

Lu Sui lowered his gaze. "I’m sorry, I have lost contact with headquarters. I don’t know what the current policies are, but please believe that the nation will not abandon its people, and there will surely be strong measures in place."

The robust man scoffed. "You officials just love spouting empty, fake words."

Song Yingjun grew agitated. He stepped forward and challenged, "How can you think that? Do you know how dire the situation is outside? There are already so many..."

Lu Sui glanced at Song Yingjun, signaling him to stop the negativity.

"Please have a little faith," Lu Sui said. "The country will not sit idly by."

Though he didn't know how many people at headquarters had become zombies, he knew that the more they succumbed to despair, the lower their morale would be. If they lost their spirit, they would never survive against the zombies.

"Fine. Is what you said outside true?" the robust man asked. "You’ll take us to a safe base?"

Lu Sui nodded.

The robust man relaxed slightly, though his tone remained aggressive. "I don’t usually trust anyone, but for the sake of you being soldiers, I’ll take your word for it." He turned to the tall, thin man. "Baozi, get them each a bag of bread and a bottle of mineral water."

Finally, the man’s gaze drifted intentionally or otherwise toward Shen Shiwei. His tone softened. "Oh, and give this young lady a bottle of milk."

Shen Shiwei loathed that look; it was the exact same expression the man she had killed at school had worn. It was lecherous and disgusting. She shrank back behind Shen Heng.

Wei Qing noticed it too. He moved a few steps to the side, completely blocking the man’s line of sight.

Zhou Bao handed out food to Lu Sui and the others. When he reached Shen Shiwei, he hesitated for a moment before continuing to the next person as if nothing had happened.

Shen Shiwei handed her food and drink to Shen Heng. "Brother, you need your strength for what's ahead. Eat more."

Shen Heng did not decline, taking the items and eating hungrily. Shen Shiwei’s spatial storage was full of food, and she never let Shen Heng go hungry, yet he always felt ravenous. Accustomed to fine dining in the past, he wasn't picky now as he dryly swallowed the bread.

But Shen Shiwei was picky. Even though she was hungry, she couldn't bring herself to eat these things. She looked at Wei Qing pitifully; she wanted the noodles he usually cooked.

Wei Qing felt flustered by her gaze and quickly asked, "What's wrong?"

"I want noodles."

Wei Qing was taken aback. "But there’s no fire here."

Shen Shiwei sighed deeply and muttered to herself, "Why doesn't anyone among us have a fire ability?"

The robust man heard her request and pulled out his freshly prepared instant noodles, smiling at her. "Little sister, want to come over and have some of this?"

Shen Shiwei glanced at the instant noodles in his hand with no interest. She never ate such unhealthy food.

Song Yingjun asked, "Where did you get boiling water?"

"It’s water boiled with solid alcohol fuel," the store clerk explained.

Shen Shiwei immediately asked, "Is there any left?"

The clerk replied, "There are only two boxes of fuel left in stock. What do you want to cook?"

"Noodles," Shen Shiwei said.

"That won't work. The alcohol blocks will run out before the noodles are even cooked."

Shen Shiwei looked distressed. She had no appetite—absolutely none.

She examined the layout of the store, and her eyes finally landed on the two people sitting on the floor. A moment later, lines of text appeared in her mind:

*[The girl’s younger brother is sick, but no one offers to help, leading to a high fever that persists through the night. It develops into a lung infection, and he slowly stops breathing. In her despair, the girl sneaks to the door in the middle of the night and opens it, letting in a swarm of zombies. Everyone in the room is infected and killed.]*

Shen Shiwei was stunned for a long while. So, this text was telling her that they were all about to die here—this was different from the original ending of the novel! This proved that Shen Shiwei had truly changed her own fate.

However, it seemed she had changed it to die even sooner. That was a bit of a loss.

"Is he sick?"

Shen Shiwei suddenly walked over to the girl and stood over the two of them. The girl’s gaze fell first on Shen Shiwei’s polished leather shoes, then moved slowly upward to meet her eyes.

The girl’s eyes were bright, as if hope had been reignited. Her voice trembled with desperation. "Can you save my brother? He has a fever, and I don’t have any medicine."
